Time to spin a dark groove! This one's about those wonderful character qualities known as Selfishness and Vanity, haha. Some tracks I spend a literal lifetime working on. Not this one.
The day I recorded this, I had just gotten some new soft synth patches and it was my first time playing with anything that wasn't Logic stock. The best stuff always happens for me when I'm just effing around, so I had Logic recording while I dinked around thru some presets.
I fell in love with these watery tones, and liked the "dinking" so much I added some bass and strings.
The vocals were done in one take. It's one of those songs that happened very organically in just a few minutes.
When I mixed it, I had a broken interface, so I literally worked while listening back thru my iMac speakers because I didn't want to break the flow. HAHA! I cringe thinking about that now. I can hear the clipping, but it kinda sounds fucking cool doesn't it?
For the video, I knew I wanted to convey the sensual darkness of a vain, selfish woman, so I went deep into shadows... literally. I wanted an inky underwater vibe and set it up by working with dark indigos and smears of pink and magenta. Supposed to hint at the dark seductive cavern of Vanity.... martinis..... submersion into one's own delusions.... being drunk on one's self.
Then I did some overlays using a lighting rig from JD Berlingeri.
I shot the alligator scene using cheap cupcakes and those weird little alligator "grabber" toys from the check out aisle at Food 4 Less. Laughed so hard watching it back in slow-mo. Darkened it up to make it moody and leave a little to the imagination.
